David McCullough is a great historian! Some of his first books are actually better than his more recent ones. I suggest Mornings on Horseback. As for the Civil War, you might want to see if you can find James McCague's The Second Rebellion. It is the only book I have seen that is devoted solely to the NYC draft riots. I enjoyed it very much.
